Five millennia of sea-level, palaeostorm, and Maya land use

13 juni 2016 - 31 juli 2020

As in other modern deltas, the rich natural resources of the Usumacinta-Grijalva delta, Mexico have significantly contributed to the rapid advent of human civilisations, particularly of Olmec and Maya cultures. We explore the idea that human induced soil erosion in the hinterland resulted in a large supply of sediment to the rivers and contributed to the well development of the exceptionally large beach ridge plain of this delta. The understanding of delta evolution over the last thousands of years, for a tropical human-impacted setting, contributes to the prediction of future risks of deltas under environmental change.
